but we're going to make it. >> you sound great. >> sexy gruff sounding voice. >> i'll take that. >> all that cold air got you a bit. it's freezing again in parts of the bay area. down to 23 degrees now in santa rosa. 26 in napa and 27 in livermore. got a chance of some rain coming our way. we'll talk about that coming up. >> and outside we go a lot of the overnight roadwork was picked up by 4:00 this morning. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. things look good towards the peninsula. well, this morning, the world is mourning the death of nelson mandela. the former south african president died yesterday at the age of 95. this is a live look at a memorial outside his home. hundreds gathered to leave flowers, pray and celebrate his life. reporter: south africans woke up to the news that nelson mandela was dead.

the announcement was made around midnight south african time. people have been flocking to his home in black and white fitting for a man whose legacy was defined by reconciliation, by reaching out a hand to the white minority in south africa and embracing them as part of south africa's fledgling democracy when he was released after 27 years in jail. his bad is in pretoria where he will stay -- body is in pretoria where he will stay for five days so the public can view his body and then it will be flown two hours to his rural village where there should be a private family burial and funeral within about the next 10 days. cbs news, johannesburg. >> a public funeral for him will be held before his burial. world leaders will attend including president obama. in june of 1994, months after he was released from prison, nelson mandela visited the united states.

more than 70,000 people packed the open coliseum here to see him. and as kpix 5's christin ayers explains, he came because the east bay was the leader in the apartheid movement. >> reporter: a memorial of nelson mandela and a host of other humanitarian giants. >> it is you the people of oakland, the people of the bay area, who have given me and my delegation the hope to continue the struggle. >> reporter: it was no accident that nelson mandela made oakland the final stop on his 1990 u.s. freedom tour. >> the east bay was a center of the test to change the south african government and get rid of apartheid. >> reporter: ron dellums was the first to introduce antiapartheid legislation in 1972 and 7 years later berkeley

became the first in the nation to divest from south africa. >> in the '80s the divestment movement on the campus began in force. >> reporter: assemblywoman nancy skinner was part of the movement. sit-ins and mass arrests at uc- berkeley to force the campus to cut ties with corporations linked with the apartheid government. the board of regents voted to divest in 1986. so mandela's visit here four years later was particularly emotional for the east bay. >> never, ever forget it ever. >> reporter: skinner says south africa's victory was one of the east bay shared. >> it was so thrilling that we americans, that we east bay residence, could have been part of something with that kind of global impact. >> reporter: in oakland, christin ayers, kpix 5. >> former san francisco mayor willie brown served as host when mandela made his bay area visit back in 1990. >> president kennedy was assassinated, his brother

main break. this is in martinez. it happened last night around 10:30. the water has since been shut off but did create a mess with water going into a number of yards and garages in neighboring homes. police in hercules are looking for a possible serial burglar. at least eight burglaries have been reported over a three-week period. most of them happened in the birds. in every instance the door was pried open. they may be connected. two security cameras caught a man burglarizing a home. you can see the suspect digging through some personal belongings inside the house. the department released the video this week and officers say almost immediately after, calls flooded in and they arrested this man 28-year-old

richmond andres banuelos. on a normal day a1 shoe repair would repair 6 pairs of boots. yesterday they sold 40. and winter clothes are selling. >> it's time to layer up. the last two weeks our sales jumped over 500% on sweaters and jackets. >> heating companies are so in demand that customers are having a tough time getting an appointment and the north bay is a plumber's paradise with pipes freezing and bursting, plumbers very busy. they can charge up to $150 an hour. . i know someone who will stay in this weekend with a cup of tea. >> freezing temperatures again and then we have some changes coming up a little later today. going to be a very interesting day ahead. out the door we go, yup, those

freeze warnings are up again until 9:00 this morning. not going to be in place tomorrow morning but reissued saturday night and early sunday morning so again, many of those temperatures dipping down to the 20s and 30s not quite as cold as it has been but still, chilly enough. 27 degrees in livermore. 23 in santa rosa and 33 just hovering above freezing in san jose. this afternoon, we are looking at temperatures in the 40s and the low 50s but we'll see clouds moving in and a chance of showers developing a little later on today. maybe a little snow in the mountains. we'll talk about it coming up. right now let's check traffic with elizabeth. on this friday morning commute at 4:37, things are looking very quiet which is what we like to see. if you have to head to work this early in the morning, everything looks good on westbound 580 usually in the next hour the sensors start to pick up more yellow but now all green 14 minutes out of the altamont pass and looks good past vasco towards the dublin interchange. outside we go and this is live

look actually near the dublin interchange and 680. and traffic continues to move at the speed limit approaching 238 and the castro valley y. bay bridge and there is some roadwork scheduled for the next 20 minutes from the incline towards the island. no delay preaching the bay bridge toll plaza. -- no delay approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. 880 in oakland, about 15 minutes between 238 and the maze in the northbound lanes. bart has 21 trains systemwide on time and ace train number 1 got a nice start out of the central valley with no delays. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." murder haunted bay area investigators for 20 years and now there is a game changing break in the case. using dna from the family and the mold of a woman only known as pogo jane, santa cruz police identified her. she is actually cory joanne lemaster of pacifica. she was 17 when she disappeared in 1993. her body was found by hikers near uc-santa cruz in 1994. kpix 5's joe vazquez learned

more about the girl who disappeared so many years ago. >> it was horrible. >> reporter: robert hanson of pacifica was shocked to learn cory was identified as the girl whose remained were found two decades ago in santa cruz. cory lived on manor drive in pacifica with her parents both who died recently. they had adopted cory from a relative. she was a chronic runaway. it was a traumatic ordeal for the family as cory would leave home for a few days spending the night in homeless shelters in san francisco, come back, only to run away again. >> you know how some kids go through difficult teen years, she is one of those who didn't adjust. >> reporter: her body was found in santa cruz in january of 1994. police can't quite explain why

her parents didn't report her missing until 2007. >> they had record her missing a number of times -- reported her missing a number of times. maybe the last time she ran away they didn't report her but i know they had reported her before. >> reporter: joe vazquez, kpix 5. >> no one is arrested for the murder. a father and son named greg and wayne white are persons of interest: father is dead. the son lives in tennessee. new this morning an investigation is under way into the construction of a barge by google on san francisco bay. the bay conservation and development commission will determine whether google and the owners after a pier on treasure island have the necessary permits. google says it's already making changes requested by the coast guard. they plan to open a floating retail store. a ray of hope this morning in the effort to save whales stranded in the everglades. why there's now reason for optimism. >> and a blast of arctic weather grips much of the country.

everglades national park in florida, are back at sea th morning. that raises hope they a group every whales stranded until the everglades in florida are finally back at sea this morning. that raises some home that they -- hope that they can be saved. another dead whale was found yesterday bringing the total dead to 11. 30 whales are being followed by the u.s. coast guard making sure they keep moving in the right direction. >> they are heading to deeper waters so that give us confidence. but i would say it's very -- a very cautious optimism. >> it's unclear why the whales stranded themselves in just four feet of water. snow, ice and bitter cold weather is plaguing much of the country right now. from the lone star state to lake erie, millions are in a deep freeze. as marlie hall reports, the weather is more than just brutal. it's dangerous. reporter: people are scraping ice off their cars as freezing rain falls across parts of texas.

a layer of slush and ice is making the roads dangerous. it's all part of a wintry blast that's hitting much of the u.s. bringing frigid temperatures, ice and snow. >> i think the stuff is pretty froze up, a little icy. >> reporter: snow, ice and sleet combined to cause traffic trouble across the state of oklahoma. utility companies are scrambling to avoid power outages. >> an ice storm is absolutely our worst situation. >> reporter: the national weather service issued a winter storm warning for the louisville area for friday. >> hurry up, get all your trucks ready but then we have to wait to see when is the rain going to change over to snow and sleet. >> reporter: many stores across the mid-south are sold out of sat, generators and ice scrapers. >> supply was low in all those stores around. so i'm happy i was able to find some things to be prepared. >> reporter: these conditions are prompting the cancellation of flights, sports games and holiday festivities across the country. marlie hall for cbs news.

all of a sudden it's not so bad here. >> you know, we're talking about temperatures in the 20s but i mean these places back east some of the coldest temperatures in years there. >> we need to buck up here. >> but we have some cold temperatures this morning, freeze warnings in effect until 9:00 this is morning. as we are seeing some very chilly air outside. 23 santa rosa, 27 livermore, 33 in fremont. now, as we head through the day today, starting out with freezing temperatures, but then increasing clouds. chance of showers developing later on today. and then looks like the temperatures going to be warming up slowly into next week maybe back to normal:but right now, we continue to be stuck under that cold air mass and we are seeing all that air drive down to the bay area but now, we have this weak area of low pressure just beginning to develop. that is going to sweep in later today and bring with it some showers and maybe some snow down to low levels locally. temperatures around the state

50s in the central valley, 30 in lake tahoe, 38 yosemite. looks like computer models picking up on it pretty well through the day. the clouds start to gather in the middle of the day and then the afternoon showers begin to develop in the north bay and then rain overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. then it looks like things begin to dry out. winter weather advisories going up in local mountains. east bay in the santa cruz mountains could see up to 2 to 4" of snow overnight tonight into tomorrow. be careful traveling in the high country. maybe as much as a couple feet of snow in those areas. temperatures in the bay area 50s and 40s again. showers and snow in the bay area and then dry on sunday. warmer temperatures expected on tuesday and wednesday. showers by thursday. let's check your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and just a quick note. there are no chain requirements right now on interstate 80, highway 50 or the roads leading to the sierra but as lawrence just alluded to that could change here by later on today. a little closer to home

westbound 80 looks good traveling through richmond heading towards berkeley. this is a live look near carlson boulevard. drive time only about 18 minutes right now on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. and if you are heading along the peninsula, this is a live look redwood city through palo alto as you can see 101 traffic looks great so does 280. no major hot spots out there now. this is a live look near the dublin interchange through the altamont pass and the livermore valley. 14 minutes to take you towards the dublin interchange. and traffic continues to move well like i said a little earlier towards the castro valley y. outside near the oakland coliseum. no probable lems northbound or southbound if you are hopping a flight over by oakland airport. and the bay bridge this is one of our few areas of overnight roadwork not as much out there this morning. this is a live look at the toll plaza. but the roadwork is a little west of this from the incline out towards treasure island. and bart systemwide on time no delay. golden gate ferries caltrain

and ace train 1 also a great start out of the central valley. remember to tune to kcbs radio 740-am and 106.9-fm. that is your "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. an 18-year-old is under arrest for stealing part of the porsche in which "fast & furious" actor paul walker died. jameson witty is accused of falling the tow truck carrying the wreckage and grabbing a car part. detectives found the porsche's roof panel while searching a home in l.a. county. another suspect outside california is expected to surrender. it has been five mop now since some businesses in downtown oakland were damaged during a protest against the george zimmerman verdict. the store hasn't replaced the windows broken during the protest five months ago. neighbors say it's been long enough. >> it looks closed. >> reporter: no store wants to give a negative impression. >> doesn't look festive. it's brown and ugly. >> reporter: that's exactly the impression people are walking away with. >> it is an eyesore.

>> reporter: in fact, building inspectors in october cited this downtown oakland sears for blight. >> invites graffiti. >> reporter: it's because of the boarded up windows on telegraph avenue and 20th street. protestors broke them back in july. but five months later, sears still hasn't replaced them. neighbors and business owners say it's not the better way but a bad way to do business. >> like they could care less about the city of oakland. we just want you to come and spend your money but we don't really care. >> reporter: tina johnson runs a fast-food place nearby. like many she is sympathetic to what sears has experienced. violent protestors smashed its windows every time. some suspect the large retailer simply gave up on replacing them. >> they should make a decision as to whether they want to continue to do business in oakland and if so, then they need to clean it up. >> reporter: sears doesn't have any immediate plans to replace

south africa as people gather outside his home. the leader died yesterday at the age of 95. for a third morning in a row it's freezing in the bay area and there's rain in the forecast today. maybe even a little snow. for more on that here's lawrence. >> that cold air getting trapped in the bay area. we have an approaching system and yeah, we could see some no in our local mountains. it is mostly clear and very cold maybe not quite as cold in some spots this morning but still, down to 24 degrees in santa rosa. 39 in san francisco. 29 livermore. freeze warnings until 9 a.m. today and then we may catch a brief break but they may be reissued again saturday night into sunday. looks like by the afternoon, we'll see some changes coming our way today a clear start to the day but by the middle of the day we'll notice clouds rolling in a chance of rain developing later on this afternoon and tonight and that could mean a little snow maybe as much
